Eating a healthy breakfast

While the importance of eating a healthy nutritious breakfast is not news, recent studies reveal which breakfast foods should be eaten for better nutrition, lasting energy and added brain function! According to a Duke University Professor of Pediatrics, choosing healthy low Glycemic Index (GI) breakfast items such as whole grains, eggs, fruits and nuts provides children with much needed brain fuel, boosts focus and concentration and can improve school performance and grades.
The Glycemic Index (GI) provides a rating of how foods affect blood sugar and glucose levels with low GI index foods providing more sustained energy compared to high GI carbs which break down quickly (such as white bread, refined cereals, sugary drinks) and cause a rapid increase in glucose. Adults can also benefit from choosing healthier low GI breakfast foods such as whole grain bread and cereal, oatmeal, fruit and nuts which are higher in protein, fiber and nutrition. Low Glycemic Index (GI) breakfast options increase satiety making you feel fuller and more satisfied after eating, making these excellent choices for a healthy weight control diet. For more info about the Glycemic Index, go to www.glycemicindex.com and listen to (live link to NPR podcast here) the National Public Radio (NPR) podcast to learn about more healthy breakfast tips to boost energy and brain power.
Save time and money by preparing healthy organic breakfast food in advance. Find recipes for high protein smoothies, organic fruit salads and whole grain pancake mix to make and store for a healthier start to a busy day! Brew your own organic fair trade coffee, Chai or organic green tea for savings on those daily stops at the local shop.
Enjoy these easy healthy breakfast tips, recipes and savings for good taste, nutrition and variety. Learn about which low Glycemic Index (GI), high fiber protein breakfast foods are best for lasting energy and “brain fuel” for you and your family!
